Coastal Peoples Address Climate Change at First Stewards Symposium
July 20, 2012 - First StewardsJul. 17-20: Nelson Kanuk, youth plaintiff in TRUST Alaska, was the youngest of four Climate Witnesses to speak at the week-long First Stewards Symposium, a national event held at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington D.C. The symposium brought together as many as 300 coastal indigenous tribal elders, leaders, scientists, witnesses, and other scientists and policy leaders from around the nation to discuss traditional ecological knowledge and what it can teach us about past, present, and future adaptation to climate change. Nelson is one of four official “witnesses” to the symposium.
