WITNESS RECEIVES 2011 GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AWARD
Columbia University’s SIPA Honors WITNESS as Guardians of Human Rights
NEW YORK – April 7, 2011 – WITNESS will be honored at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) 11th Global Leadership Awards Dinner being held at the Mandarin Oriental on April 14.
Presented annually, SIPA’s Global Leadership Awards honor individuals and organizations, whose work in public policy and administration, have made innovative or otherwise extraordinary contributions to the global public good.
WITNESS is being recognized for its innovative use of video advocacy to open the eyes of the world to human rights violations.
“We are honored to be recognized by SIPA for being a leader in “Video for Change” and for our work to support human rights defenders globally in using visual storytelling as a powerful tool for justice,” said Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, Executive Director at WITNESS. “Recent events at home and abroad display the power of individuals to affect positive change in our communities. WITNESS thanks SIPA for this award, and for continuing to equip the world with new leaders in the public interest.”
SIPA honorees exemplify the values and qualities that Columbia’s faculty and staff strive to instill in their students.
“Each year, SIPA’s Global Leadership awardees encourage and inspire our students as they confront a world full of problems to be solved,” said Dean John H. Coatsworth. “We are thrilled that our new and growing relationship with WITNESS will give SIPA students a front-row seat on how this groundbreaking organization effectively advocates for human rights and justice around the world.”
Other honorees of the SIPA Global Leadership Awards include Paul Volker, former Federal Reserve Chairman, for his continuing leadership on national and global economic policymaking, and Mitchell Silber, Director of Intelligence Analysis for the New York Police Department, for his leadership in directing innovations to homeland security policies and enforcement structures.
