WITNESS RECEIVES TRIBECA DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION AWARD ON APRIL 27

Breakout Session to Follow About the Pros and Cons of Digital Video Advocacy;
Discussing the Arab Spring to Kony 2012

WHAT:

On Friday, April 27th WITNESS will be one of the recipients of the Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards, being honored for its two-decade long commitment of using video for justice.

After the award ceremony, WITNESS will host a breakout session with the Directors of WITNESS, who will discuss how we understand the successes, the controversies and the challenges of digital video advocacy - from videos that get 100 million views on YouTube to live broadcasts from the streets of Homs in Syria, and what we can all do to better ensure that both types of video advocacy contribute to meaningful social change.

WITNESS will provide insightful assessments on campaigns from the recent film on Uganda by Invisible Children, “Kony 2012,” which calls for the arrest of war criminal Joseph Kony and has had a dramatic reach unseen for any previous human rights film online, to how activists in Syria, Egypt and elsewhere continue to use digital media to press for change in their own countries.

Press is invited to cover the award ceremony and the breakout session RSVP is required to jcoco@witness.org by no later than Thursday, April 26, 2012 by 3pm.
