June 20,22, and 24, 2009 - WITNESS will co-present "My Neighbor, My Killer" by Anne Aghion at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival in New York City.
In the years following the Rwandan genocide, the government offered community-based trials around the country where perpetrators confessed to local leaders and were reintergrated into society. The film depicts these gacaca trials and the tense and emotional process of reconciliation. The result is an intimate understanding of memory, guilt and hope in a post-genocide society. Filmmaker Anne Aghion, who spent almost a decade interviewing both victims and perpetrators in a Rwandan community, will be presented with the festival's Nestor Almendros Award for courage in filmmaking.
The film will be shown in New York City at the Walter Reade Theater on June 20 at 6:30PM, June 22 at 8:45PM, June 24 at 4PM. Visit the festival's website for more information and tickets. The festival runs June 11- 25, 2009.
