Summary:
Sanamacha's Story chronicles the disappearance of a 15 year old boy, Yumlembam Sanamacha, in Manipur. The state of Manipur, in the highlands of northeastern India, is one of eight states inhabited by 40 million people of Tibeto-Burman origin. Since the 1950s, the region has produced several secessionist movements against the Indian government. In response, India has militarized the region. The Indian government restricts entry by foreign nationals, and bars international media and human rights observers from entering the northeast. On the night of February 12 1998, the Indian military entered Sanamacha's home and abducted him in front of dozens of witnesses. Sanamacha has not been seen since, nor has his body ever been recovered. The video documents the testimonies of witnesses and family members and provides insight into the advocacy work grassroots groups in Manipur have done to bring the military's actions to justice. Action: The video "Sanamacha's Story" was produced by WITNESS and Human Rights Alert. The film documents the testimony of witnesses to Sanamacha's abduction as well as his family's grief after his disappearance. Local activists including Babloo Loitongam of Human Rights Alert and witnesses to the abduction prompted the Manipur State Government to constitute a Commission of Inquiry to look into Sanamacha's case.

Why Human Rights Video: The first-hand testimony in "Sanamacha's Story" galvanized community support for the case. Thanks to the efforts of activists including the local Joint Action Committee Yairipok, the Meira Paibis, and human rights activists like Babloo Loitongbam, the Gauhati High Court was obligated to investigate the case.

Result: The findings of the resulting interim report were not released to the public. But a Habeas Corpus petition filed in the Gauhati High Court resulted in another full and public inquiry which found that there was insufficient evidence to show that Sanamacha escaped Army custody. The Guwahati High Court was then obligated to try the case, the first such case to be tried outside an Army court.

The Gauhati High Court ruled that Sanamacha was indeed killed, and interim compensation was granted to his family. However, there have been no formal charges brought by the police against the perpetrators of this killing.
