Peter Gabriel performs Womad concert to benefit WITNESS Print E-mail

Peter Gabriel performed a special benefit concert for WITNESS at the World of Music and Dance (WOMAD) Festival in Charlton Park, UK on July 25. The concert was his only scheduled performance in Europe for 2009 and drew thousands of fans. The concert raised £100,000 for WITNESS.

Not only was WITNESS footage featured prominently before and at the start of the show, but Peter highlighted current human rights issues as well. He paid his respects to the late Natalia Estemirova, dedicating the song “Biko” to the recently murdered Russian activist and WITNESS collaborator. Her photo was projected from the stage as Gabriel performed his anti-apartheid song about Steve Biko, a human rights activist who died in police custody in the 1970s.

The BBC and other news outlets covered the concert.

WITNESS also had a tent at the festival and engaged hundreds of concertgoers - gathering signatures on a petition to end slave labor in rural Brazil.

Many thanks to Peter and his team for making this unforgettable night possible. Also special thanks to Pentagram for designing a limited edition t-shirt for the event- the shirts sold out!
