Leila Lobos, LAC Program Coordinator Leila Lobos is a journalist and project coordinator with more than a decade of experience in community communication, popular education, and audiovisual production focused on human rights. As Program Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean at WITNESS, she helps advance regional programs that strengthen social movements, communities, and grassroots media in using video as a tool for advocacy, memory, and legal evidence. She has worked with various community media and social organizations across Latin America — mainly in Argentina — documenting human rights violations and facilitating trainings on safety and risk management for journalists. As a reporter, she has covered social conflicts, elections, and topics related to justice and human rights for both local and regional media. She specializes in risk analysis and the creation of safety protocols for covering protests in contexts of state violence, promoting ethical and secure practices in audiovisual production. In addition, she has developed and facilitated communication workshops for human rights defenders, using participatory and community-based approaches. Her work connects communication, justice, and collective memory as tools for social transformation.

Mwara Gichanga, Africa Program Coordinator Mwara Gichanga is a Program Coordinator for Africa at WITNESS, where she supports activists, advocates, and legal experts across the continent to leverage the power of video and technology in the defense of human rights. In this role, she works to elevate community-based approaches, strengthening the capacity of human rights defenders and journalists to resist delegitimization, assert truthful narratives, and advance justice, amplifying the voice of the continent and fostering resilient, human-centered approaches to advocacy. Previously, Mwara worked as a Public Interest Gender and Creative Technologist, designing research supporting community movements and advocacy. She is deeply committed to championing technology and internet health for marginalized groups, focusing her professional journey on reducing the digital divide and creating inclusive, safe, and representative online spaces. Her work articulates a vision of technology that centers inclusion, diversity, and equity. She has contributed to projects examining internet infrastructure through a gendered lens, advancing language representation in digital spaces, and applying human-centered design to promote safety and accessibility. Mwara holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Journalism and Media Relations and a Diploma in Public Relations from the University of Nairobi.

Emma Mitra, Manager of Operations and Knowledge Management Emma is the manager of Operations and Knowledge Management at WITNESS. She designs and delivers strategies that keep the organization’s global team connected, supported, and equipped to do their vital work defending human rights. Emma leads initiatives that help WITNESS run more smoothly — from redesigning the website and developing an AI-in-the-workplace policy, to co-leading monitoring and evaluation processes and rethinking organization-wide project management. She is passionate about inclusive, collaborative change that reflects WITNESS’s values and DEIJ principles. Emma brings over a decade of experience in digital strategy, editorial leadership, and project management. Before joining WITNESS, she worked with nonprofits, educational platforms, and public institutions as a communications and engagement specialist — helping organizations tell stories clearly, connect meaningfully with their audiences and to design systems that work. Emma thrives in collaboration, a thoughtful approach to change, and believes in intentional and innovative operational work rooted in care. She thrives on bringing order to chaos — whether mapping a knowledge management strategy or running a team workshop. Gina Mutua, Global People Specialist Gina is the Global People Specialist at WITNESS.  In her role, Gina leads critical HR operations that keep the team running smoothly and effectively. She oversees payroll, manages vendor relationships, and handles a wide range of employment-related matters. In addition, she ensures compliance with all relevant policies and regulations, while serving as a trusted point of contact for day-to-day HR support and guidance. She has experience partnering with teams and leaders across diverse geographies to deliver impactful people strategies that align with organizational goals and foster employee well-being. Before joining WITNESS, Gina has contributed her skills and expertise to amazing organizations including Change.org, Andela, Digital Divide Data (DDD), and the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics. In these organizations, she supported teams across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. She thrives on connecting with people and building relationships where everyone feels valued, empowered, and motivated to reach their full potential. Gina holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Management Science & Human Resource from Strathmore University, Kenya. She is based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Bárbara González Segovia, People Relations Coordinator As part of her role as People Relations Coordinator, Bárbara (she/they/ella/ela) supports WITNESS in strengthening our organizational culture, making sure our work aligns with our values, advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice within our internal practices, as well as adding fun elements to our team dynamics to help us connect with each other. She also supports team experiences throughout recruitment, onboarding and offboarding, and addressing conflict transformation. Bárbara has more than 10 years of experience working in the nonprofit and human rights sectors. Her work has always been divided between her two professional passions: empowering people and teams to build shared missions and practices, and running programs and projects focused on environmental protection, Indigenous rights, and women’s empowerment. Cool fact: she lived and worked in the Amazon Rainforest for around five years, where she still has many ties and relationships with grassroots communities in Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil. She has also worked with Indigenous territories from other parts of the world. Bárbara is a joyful and caring soul who values people and communities.
